Face Paints: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

One of the questions I get asked most often is where I get my face paints. The answer is simple. I order them from reputable online face paint suppliers (such as Sillyfarm.com or Jestpaint.com) simply because stores in this area do not carry these types of paints. The paints are safe, non-toxic, hypo-allergenic water-based professional make-up that has been formulated in strict accordance with FDA regulations on cosmetics. The only exception is the Snazarroo brand that can occasionally be found here which is the only one I would recommend.

So what is the difference between the paint I use and the “face paint” you find in the stores around here? Plenty! Things to know about cheap paint found in Halloween stores and craft stores.

  1. They are NOT safe! Most are acrylic which should never be used on skin. They contain polymers which are potential cancer causing substances. They are labeled “Non-Toxic” which is not the same as FDA approved.
  2. They have a much greater “Stain Factor”.
  3. They are much more irritating on the skin as they are heavy and dry. It will not be a pleasant experience and you will want to wash it off immediately.
  4. They will have a much greater chance of producing a skin rash or allergic reaction.
  5. They are hard to work with, have poor coverage, dull colors and very few choices. Usually coming in a set of 6 standard colors.

In Comparison, professional FDA approved paints have the following qualities.

  1. They are light and breathable. You may even forget you have paint on your face.
  2. Although no manufacturer can guarantee no allergic reaction, professional face paint has put major research and development into testing its products, something the cheaper paints cannot afford to do. Top brands have a 1 in 10,000,000 ratio of a reaction and even then, the reaction could have been caused from the products used in its removal.
  3. The colors are vibrant, easy to work with, and go on the skin very smoothly.
  4. While they may be more expensive, they will last longer. The saying “You get what you pay for” is 100% true in this case!
